Dense fibrous connective tissue

It fills the spaces between muscle fibers, surrounds blood and lymph vessels, and supports organs in the abdominal cavity. The histology of transverse tissue from long bone shows a typical arrangement of osteocytes in concentric circles around a central canal Figure 4.

One type of regular dense connective tissue is a tendon. Chondrocytes are found in spaces within the tissue called lacunae.

One of the types, fibrous connective tissue, is especially strong. Osteoclasts bore tunnels into the bone and osteocytes are found in the lacunae.

Also present are various leukocytes white blood cells involved in immune response. Spongy bone is made of tiny plates called trabeculae these plates serve as struts to give the spongy bone strength. It provides protection to internal organs and supports the body. Calcium phosphate gives bone its firmness. The material in the connective tissue gives it a loose consistency similar to a cotton ball that has been pulled apart. Sheets of dense connective tissue cover muscles, separate neighbouring muscles and also serve to give attachment to muscle fibres. A large number of capillaries allow rapid storage and mobilization of lipid molecules. Ligaments and tendons are made of dense regular connective tissue. This tissue gives rigid support as well as elasticity. Figure 6. These structures help attach muscles to bones and link bones together at joints. The cells, called chondrocytes, make the matrix and fibers of the tissue. Some of these tissues are solid and strong, while others are fluid and flexible.

Adipocytes appear round and swollen when fat is being stored and shrink as fat is used. Hyaline cartilage is flexible, elastic, and surrounded by a dense membrane called perichondrium.

Osteoblasts deposit bone material into the matrix and, after the matrix surrounds them, they continue to live, but in a reduced metabolic state as osteocytes. It is lighter than compact bone and found in the interior of some bones and at the end of long bones.
